Active Transportation Network Plan Discussion Paper

We are writing an Active Transportation Network Plan Discussion Paper for the City of Summerside and Area.  We will present the all ages and all abilities Network Plan to the City of Summerside at the March 20, 2023, Council Meeting.  Anyone who is interested, and wishes to support active transportation and related programs such as Cycling Without Age, in Summerside, is encouraged to attend.

Cycling Without Age

Cycling Without Age is an international program that connects seniors in manors to their community via a trained volunteer who bicycles an e-powered Trishaw around the community. We are trying to bring this quality-of-life program to Summerside.

Pedestrian / Cyclist Collisions with Motor Vehicles

We will continue to research and provide the public with data on the number and locations of collisions between pedestrians/cyclists and motor vehicles in the City of Summerside. We hope that raising awareness of this sometimes fatal issue will encourage protected AT infrastructure and education of motorists/cyclists in our city.  Thus, eliminating pedestrian / cyclist injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions.

Learn to Ride a Two-Wheeler Events (FREE)

SAFE Summerside will coordinate an annual Learn to Ride a Two-Wheeler event on the Island.  In 2022, we held two events (Summerside and Charlottetown) and helped introduce 22 children to the balance-first method, with many leaving the event now able to bicycle for the first time.  A fabulous day and we can't wait until Sept 2023 for our next event!

Walk / Ride to Support AT

On a slightly "drizzly" morning in October 2022, 40+ AT users came out to support AT in Summerside and Area.  There was such a comradery of enthusiasm and energy in the air.  During this event, SAFE Summerside launched its draft AT Network discussion paper to the public.

Make Greenwood Drive AT Pathway (Bike Lane) Accessible

 

On September 15, 2022, we learned the City of Summerside started Phase Two of the Greenwood Drive bike lane project.  The next day, we watched as five storm drains were installed directly "on top" of the AT pathway.  We presented our concerns on September 20 at a City Council Meeting and were interviewed by CBC Radio.
